BIRTH DOULA2 ANTENATAL MEETINGS - ON CALL FOR YOU FROM 38 WEEKS - 2 POSTNATAL MEETINGS
I can be flexible on how many of the 4 meetings you want on either side of the birth, and their content, but normally they are organised as below :
1st ANTENATAL We explore your preferences for labour and birth and any concerns you may have. You may borrow books, dvds and cds from my library and I signpost you to evidence-based research to support you in making informed choices. I help you to draw up a wishlist to present to your midwife.
2nd ANTENATAL We discuss how we might best work together during your labour, birth and the immediate postnatal period. If your partner has chosen to be present at the birth I am there to support you both, act in accordance with your wishes and maintain a flexible attitude, being as hands-on or off as you require. We look at breathing and comfort measures, optimal positions for labour and birth, and how to use the birth environment and its resources.
ON CALL FOR LABOUR FROM 38 WEEKS
I take one birth a month so I can be fully available for you in labour.
If you are going into hospital I prefer to meet you at home unless the baby comes in a hurry.
I stay with you through labour and birth until the first hours after your baby is born, attending to your needs until you are happy to be left.
1st POSTNATAL I visit you at home or hospital to debrief the birth and ensure you are feeling supported in your feeding choices with your newborn, and that you are resting and comfortable.
If you are breastfeeding I assist with positioning and attachment and give you information on how to promote lactation and avoid discomfort, making it as enjoyable an experience as possible while maximising your opportunity for rest and recuperation.
If you are keeping your placenta, I can make you a fruitfilled nutritious smoothie which is a great boost to your well-being and energy levels.
2nd POSTNATAL This final visit is to maintain feeding support, attend to general wellbeing and shore you up in this joyous but tiring period. My role is to build up your confidence as new parents by showing you gentle ways to hold and settle your baby, using positions for all round development.
If you feel you would like ongoing support and want to set up further postnatal bookings with me, please see the next page.
PREPARATION FOR BREASTFEEDING AND FIRST FEW DAYSFor all parents who want to top up their antenatal education with some useful postbirth guidance, this is a 2 hour session on preparation for breastfeeding, skin to skin and holding and settling your baby.
Parents often find new information difficult to absorb in the sleepless first few hours and days in hospital or at home, so it is useful to prepare and practice in advance of the birth to gain a clearer idea of what to expect.
It serves as a confidence booster in bonding with your newborn, no matter how many babies you have had or how you birth your baby : physiologically or with varying degrees of intervention.
